Book Summary

With their coven’s spell book still missing, Molly and Elsie—along with their ghostly friend Olivia, her daughter Dorothy, and her boyfriend Brian—are all on edge, especially now that Dorothy’s infamously wicked father is back in the picture. So when they receive an invitation to an exclusive Witches Ball, the ladies jump at the chance to dress up and have some fun.

The castle locale is spectacular and the party is hopping, but the festivities come to a swift end when a member of the Grand Council of Witches is murdered. With the whole place on lock down, the coven is determined to find the cunning killer, even with an angry council and a real Spanish Inquisitor breathing down their necks…

Joyce and Jim Lavene

Book Review by Bree Herron

To say that it is easy to review any book is a feat. To say that I didn’t find myself saddened with reading this book, is an understatement. As many of us surely were. But I was also moved, by the book, the authors and the story. I found myself savory every word, as it could be the last. I was honored to get to know Joyce and Jim, through their group on social media. I felt like a new kid to a big school! Here I was getting to talk to them, often and even read more books by them! Boy, I was honored. Our literary world lost two amazing and talented authors this year, and by no means did they leave us with anything but a five star book.

If you love the mystic and magical, then this is a series you must read. Putting On the Witch, is a great installment in the Retired Witches Mysteries. I would recommend reading the others, in the series to get the back story but this was a great book to read as the first for me from the series.

I love the modern aspects mixed with the history of witchcraft. The relationships that the characters had were advanced and some of my favorites to date. They held each other in high respect, and yet were a unique family that had its humor and stress.  The murder is epic, a twist or three are mixed in to give the reader a story they will never forget.

My introduction to Jim & Joyce was through their JJ Cook name. I started with the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade series and absolutely fell in love. I was very saddened to hear of their passing and wish I could have gotten to know them better beforehand. I’m really glad you enjoyed their work and thanks for sharing your review.
