Summer Prescott- Part 1 interview

Summer Prescott, is a witty and charming author. So much in fact that I split our chat into 2 interviews! Readers and fans can enjoy her for two weeks as a spotlight author! Her books bring you to the table of pure joy. I am constantly reminding myself to have some cookies or cupcakes on hand with her books. She has recently branched out to being a publisher as well as continuing her personal writing. Her publishing house, hosts delectable and enticing reads that rival the best breakfast you can imagine. Yes, she does murder but, let’s be honest when we read mysteries we get hungry. We might as well read our cake and eat it too.

Each person that comments and follows will be entered for the chance to win an e-copy of a Prescott book of their choice! Giveaway will end July 31,2016.

About The Author

Growing up with a military dad, I've had the amazing experience of having lived all over the world - experiencing other cultures, customs and cuisines from an early age. Now that I've settled into a peaceful and pleasant adulthood in the Midwest, my loves in life are simple - a good book, some fine wine, and furry friends underfoot. I've found that Cozy Mystery readers are some of the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet, and I'm glad to have befriended many of you as I journey through this wonderful mystery called life. I find inspiration for characters every day in the people I meet and the places I visit. Taking unique traits and expanding upon them, I imagine the way that new characters would look, talk, think and go about their daily lives. The folks in my books live interesting and colorful lives in the movie that plays in my head, and I get to enjoy writing down their shenanigans.
My Interview With The Author

Bree

I’m excited to get to chat about all the cool work you do! So let’s begin. Why mystery books?

Summer Prescott

Mysteries are such fun because they include smart, likable characters who are determined enough and clever enough to figure out the situation.

Bree

They are pretty likable. I love that it usually is the common person not always an actual detective.

Summer Prescott

We’re a bunch of foodies! We make ourselves hungry and hopefully others too. I do have an incredible cover artist who seems to be able to accurately realize my vision for the covers.

Bree

That is the truth! Curiosity doesn’t kill this cat ???? Many of your works that you have include some great food served or created. How does your work or that of those you publish stand out?

And your covers are always so bright and fun!! If I was judging the cover of a book I would pick them up.

Summer Prescott

Exactly! It makes the characters more relate-able. We’re not all detectives, but we’re all curious…

Bree

Your books have taught me I better have some skittles or cake beside me while I read! I love the food.

Summer Prescott

And thank you, by the way.

Exactly! or a sandwich if you’re reading Patti Benning!

Bree

Right! I have started to make more sandwiches with salads on the side when reading her work! What played into your decision to start publishing books?

Summer Prescott

Actually, I was continually brimming with stories that I wanted to see played out, and realized that I couldn’t write them all. When my books became a bit more successful, I jumped at the opportunity to help other new writers experience the joy that I do, which comes from being able to make a living doing what we love.

Bree

I think that is so wonderful! And it certainly has given us readers a large variety of fun books to read. Who is your personal favorite character that you just can’t get enough of?

Summer Prescott

That’s such a tough question, but I really love Cassie in the Bandit Hills series. She’s so matter-of-fact regarding the supernatural and has this great pithy wit.

Bree

That’s actually one series I haven’t tried yet! Can you tell me more?

Summer Prescott

You have to try it! I literally crack up when I read the raw manuscripts. Blair’s writing is funny and engaging. The series takes place in a haunted town that’s not actually scary. The main character owns a second hand shop and dates a PI. This series is a scream! In a good way

Bree

That sounds good. I love towns with character! It’s so hard to make them stand out and this certainly sounds like a howling good time LOL. So does she have powers? Or just ghosts?

Summer Prescott

hahaha! I think I’ll use that!

Ghosts like to talk to her. They often throw things around her shop to get her attention so she’ll solve the crime.

Bree

Feel free too LOL. What character that you have written has been the toughest to get into? Or the most stubborn to allow you create?

Ghosts that have the arms of quarterbacks haha, oh please tell me that they aren’t perfect aims. I would feel deflated to be shown up by a ghost.

Summer Prescott

There’s a very mysterious character in the INNcredibly Sweet Series named Janssen. I have special plans for him, but I have to keep them hidden for a while yet, so when I write him, I have to be extra cagey.

Lol, the ghosts are pretty good shots, but Cassie’s quick to duck, LOL.

Bree

So tell me about the profile image I’m seeing in this chat, it looks like pink whipped frosting with cherries? Care to share what book it is for?

Summer Prescott

It’s not for any book in particular, it’s just a sassy cupcake, which I thought seemed appropriate

Bree

Very. Haha, we should have a cupcake in real life named the Sassy.

Summer Prescott

Great idea! I would happily eat that! And craving good food is an occupational hazard for me!

Bree

LOL, craving books is my occupational hazard. As a librarian I am constantly wanting more! So How do you unwind after a book releases?

Summer Prescott

It depends – usually with a celebratory dinner – sushi, steak, pizza..

Bree

What character do you love making the unpopular or misunderstood one?

Summer Prescott

OMG!!! Timothy Eckels! Tim is the coroner in the INNcredibly Sweet Series. He’s very focused and incredibly socially inept and awkward. He’s more comfortable around the dead than he is around the living, and he’s quiet, but brilliant. His assistant Fiona loves to cheerfully torment him to draw him out.

Bree

Awe, he sounds adorable lol. How do you envision him to look?

Summer Prescott

He’s a favorite for lots of readers. We all delight in his quirkiness

He has a “dad bod” and is rather pale, with thin hair and coke-bottle glasses.

Bree

Yes! Pocket protectors?

Summer Prescott

Exactly! Plaid dress shirts and oxfords in Florida…

Bree

Any new books coming out soon?

Summer Prescott

Well, I’m currently writing IS #8, and once I’ve done that, I’m going to take a short break from that series and actually do a full-length novel about Tim’s backstory. It won’t be cozy, it’ll be a bit darker and more suspenseful.

Readers have been requesting something a bit more intense, so I”m going for it!
