Book Summary
Kat transformed in front of him. Her chin came up, her fingers stopped twitching with the fabric of her gown, and a real sparkle bubbled in her eyes. It was like watching Snow White come to life when the prince kissed her.
A heartwarming WWII historical from award-winning author Cara Putman:
Kat Miller has dreamed of playing baseball her entire life. When she earns a spot on a team in the All-American Girls Professional Softball League, she finds that things aren’t as glamorous as she imagined. She struggles with long road trips, grueling practices, and older teammates who are jealous of her success. And to top it all off, an irritating reporter is constantly getting under Kat’s skin.
Events in Jack Raymond’s career have left him cynical and distanced from God. He never wanted to write at a small paper, and he certainly didn’t want to be assigned to something as inconsequential as a women’s softball team. Then Kat walks into his life. The fiery, young softball player somehow climbs the walls around his heart and makes him want to hope again.
When lies fly and the league appears to fail, will Kat and Jack’s new love survive?

Since the time she could read Nancy Drew, Cara has wanted to write mysteries. In 2005 she attended a book signing at her local Christian bookstore. The rest, as they say, was history. There she met a fellow Indiana writer Colleen Coble. With prompting from her husband, Cara shared her dream with Colleen. Since those infamous words, Cara’s been writing award-winning books. She is currently working on book 30 and 31.
Cara Putman is an active member of ACFW, and currently serves on its Executive Board. She has also been the Indiana ACFW chapter president and served as the Area Coordinator for Indiana.
Cara is also an attorney, lecturer at a Big Ten university, active in women’s ministry, and all around crazy woman. Crazy about God, her husband and her kids that is. She graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Go Huskers!) and George Mason Law School, and Krannert School of Management.

Book Review by Bree Herron
I love to watch baseball, take me out to the ball game will play in my head each time I look at the book. Now, women play softball (though they can play baseball as well) and that is a sport I have never played. Seriously, have you seen the size of the ball and the fast pitch on some of the ladies? Well, you will feel the dust, the hits, and the pure wonder in this novel as you dive into the world of Kat Miller.
Characters
Kat Miller is a strong cookie. I loved her from the first page. Her mind worked in a way that brought the reader into her world of fast pitches and home runs. She wasn’t though just about the sport and I admire that she was multi-layered. The author created unique individuals for the team. It wasn’t just clumped together and given a thumbs up. It felt as though the author really took her time to put heart and soul into each character.
Enjoyable Moments
I love the sport that was given to readers in this book. It was created to sound fun and enjoyable. I think the empowering moments of the women were a highlight as well. They worked hard on and off the field. I could truly see myself giving this sport a chance now.
Synoptic
Where has this book and author been all these years? Okay, let me just say I am far beyond a fan now of Cara Putman’s work. This book not only was fun to read, but gave me thoughts on a trying something new. I think it is always neat when an author writes in such a way that a reader wants to go out a do what the character did. In this case, I may face the fear of the large softball or at least pickup a baseball to pitch. God’s love is our true win and Putman puts the faith into these characters in a way that is relatable and humble.
Readers that are looking for a unique read, one that certainly is in a league of its own (see what I did there, LOL) will find this book to be right on base. It has awesome characters, a delightful setting and theme. It isn’t just a story about a sport and girls. It is a story about achieving and being successful in more ways than a home run. I recommend reading this story.
Sports, let’s talk your sport!
