Book Summary
In 1772 England, Lady Keturah Banning Tomlinson and her sisters find themselves the heiresses of their father’s estates and know they have one option: Go to the West Indies to save what is left of their heritage.
Although it flies against all the conventions for women of the time, they’re determined to make their own way in the world. But once they arrive in the Caribbean, proper gender roles are the least of their concerns. On the infamous island of Nevis, the sisters discover the legacy of the legendary sugar barons has vastly declined–and that’s just the start of what their eyes are opened to in this unfamiliar world.
Keturah never intends to put herself at the mercy of a man again, but every man on the island seems to be trying to win her hand and, with it, the ownership of her plantation. She could desperately use an ally, but even an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend leaves her questioning his motives.
Set on keeping her family together and saving her father’s plantation, can Keturah ever surrender her stubbornness and guarded heart to God and find the healing and love awaiting her?

Book Review by Bree Herron
Intensely beautiful, this story will have you gripping the pages and feeling a part of the adventure. Keturah is a character like none other and this story is certainly a turning point for Christian Fiction.
Characters
There are many characters to choose from in this book, but I was drawn to the book’s namesake. Keturah is a rarity in the era and genre. She has many layers to her that make a reader feel as though she is an easy character to know when she is truly a complex gal. Think about how much a woman during this time would have faced? Keturah did it with strength and an ability that I don’t think modern women would hold. She was easily the one character that I connected to in this book.
Setting
Historically speaking this is a tough time period to write strong female characters into. I felt though that the author did a great balance of the period and her imagination. The area (England to West Indies) couldn’t have been better described.
Synoptic
The author dove into a great piece of work. As mentioned above this time period was not female friendly, and we were in many ways uncivilized. I think the author created not only a book with strong and beautiful characters but she also built this book to stand strong for faith and history with her imagination built into it. I was very pleased to see how she incorporated tough moments, and eased this reader in those times.
I highly recommend this novel to all readers, even those that may not have a faith. I truly think everyone could enjoy reading this book on some level. As, for me this book will be the first of many by this author that I will read and review. Look forward to the next book in the series.
