Book Summary
Murder takes the cake in an irresistible Emergency Dessert Squad mystery from the national bestselling author of The Silence of the Flans.
The Emergency Dessert Squad business is booming, with owner and baker Winnie Johnson working overtime to satisfy the emergency cravings of Silver Lake, Ohio.Ā Her latest order, a plate of motivational desserts for an artistsā retreat, is just what she needs to keep her mind off her own relationship woes.
But Winnieās problems seem like trifles when she discovers the body of retreat owner Sally Dearfield mere inches away from five oh-so-eccentric and viable suspects. Now, this baking detective must uncover the inspiration behind Sallyās murder before another creative genius is iced.
While spending a rainy afternoon at a friend's house more than thirty years ago, Laura Bradford (a.k.a. Elizabeth Lynn Casey) fell in love with writing over a stack of blank paper, a box of crayons, and a freshly sharpened number two pencil. From that moment forward, she never wanted to do anything else.
Today, Laura is the national bestselling author of the Amish Mysteries, the Jenkins & Burns Mysteries, and the Southern Sewing Circle Mysteries (written as Elizabeth Lynn Casey). A new cozy mystery series will be added to the mix in 2016 with the release of The Emergency Dessert Squad Mysteries. Laura is a former Agatha nominee and the recipient of an RT Reviewerās Choice Award in romance. In her free time, Laura enjoys making memories with her family, traveling, baking, and visiting the sea lions at the Central Park Zoo. Book Review by Bree Herron
Who doesn’t want a yummy, delicious mystery to start the new year off with? I am thrilled that this is one that I am starting with and it didn’t let me down. An Emergency Dessert Squad Mystery series is one that I get my sweet tooth fix with and my love of a good mystery fill as well.
Characters
If you haven’t met Winnie yet, you are missing out on an amazing character. She delights me like a hot fudge sundae.Winnie is fun, and always up for feeding a sweet tooth in need, her ability to solve crime is truly the icing on the cakes she makes. I love that there is always a sweet point to Winnie in each book as well, a nice reminder that she is a kind and loving gal.
Enjoyable Moments
The idea of motivational treats was awesome to me, though I think they would only motivate my waist size up. I really loved that we had a setting with the a motivational retreat, it was slightly calming even with the murder.
Synoptic
I have said in other reviews of this series how much I need a dessert emergency vehicle in my life, and this is nothing new. The series is strong with an excellent plot that has a great climax through the who done it. I am always eager to team up with Winnie as she is an excellent sleuth and a sweet character. I am eager to keep going with reading this fun series, and see what treat is coming next!

My favorite sweet treat would be old fashioned chocolate fudge made with marshmallows. Thank you for the review & giveaway opportunity.
My favorite winter sweet treat has to be White Christmas Fudge. I saw winter because I always associate it with the holidays and eating it through to spring. š I like that it makes a small pan so that I can have control of my eating limits that ways. LOL Here’s the recipe.
White Christmas Fudge
Ingredients
1 teaspoon plus 1/4 cup butter, divided
2-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
2/3 cup milk
12 ounces white baking chocolate, chopped
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
3/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted
1/4 cup chopped dried apricots
1/4 cup dried cherries
1/4 cup dried cranberries
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange your sliced almonds on a baking sheet and bake for 5-8 minutes, or until lightly brown, set aside.
Line a 9-in. square pan with foil and grease the foil with 1 teaspoon butter; set aside.
In a large heavy saucepan, combine the confectioners’ sugar, milk and remaining butter. Cook and stir over medium heat until combined. Bring to a boil; boil for 5 minutes without stirring. Reduce heat to low; stir in white chocolate. Cook and stir until chocolate is melted.
Remove from the heat; stir in extract. Fold in the almonds, apricots, cherries and cranberries. Immediately spread into prepared pan. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until set.
Using foil, lift fudge out of pan. Discard foil; cut fudge into 1-in. squares. Store in the refrigerator.
Yield: about 2 pounds.
