Book Summary

“We are rapidly ripening for fascism. This American writer leaves us with no illusions about ourselves.” —Svetlana Alexievich, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism.  Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Timothy Snyder

Book Review by Bree Herron

The power behind this book will leave you with questions that you may fear the answers to. Timothy Snyder must have felt pulled to write this book, for we needed a reminder and a wake up call.

First off, this book is darling little. Like fit in your pocket. I loved carrying it around with me. Okay, now enough of me stating the look. The substance of this book is mind altering. I felt like I was having moments of clarity reading this book. I felt moments of worry, and fear though as well. We can’t forget the past, nor do we truly repeat it, however we are capable of being highly influenced from history.

This book is great one for a reader looking to spark that talk, a reader seeking a reminder of the past and the influence it can have on the future. It is a book that will shape the way you look at our modern day government.
